Our dogs

The heart of Karma

Every Karma breeding begins with the dogs.

For more than 35 years, our Portuguese Water Dogs have been thoughtfully bred with an unwavering commitment to health, temperament, structure, type and preservation of the breed.

Our dogs are not simply part of our breeding program. They are members of our family, accomplished representatives of their breed, and the foundation upon which each generation of Karma Portuguese Water Dogs is built.

Form & function

Bred with purpose

Our philosophy has always been simple:

Where form and function come together.

A beautiful Portuguese Water Dog should also be a sound, athletic, intelligent and confident Portuguese Water Dog.

We carefully consider pedigree, structure, movement, temperament, health and genetic diversity when planning every breeding. No decision is based on a single trait or accomplishment. We look at the whole dog — and what that dog can contribute to generations yet to come.

Our legacy

More than champions

Over the decades, Karma has produced more than 25 AKC Grand Champions, along with dogs who have distinguished themselves in the show ring and, most importantly, as extraordinary companions.

Titles are meaningful because they provide an independent evaluation of our breeding program — but they have never been the ultimate measure of success.

Our greatest accomplishment is producing Portuguese Water Dogs who are sound in mind and body, unmistakably representative of their breed, and deeply connected to the families who love them.

Meet the Karma dogs
Waiting on Anat: registered name, titles and two to three sentences for each dog, plus portrait photographs labelled with names. Via’s photo has arrived — the rest are empty frames at the right proportion, so nothing shifts when the pictures come.

Anat — your note about Rain was cut off. It ended “because Rain represents your next generation, I would add something like:” and stopped there. The placeholder currently reads “The next generation at Karma.” Send the line you meant and it goes straight in.
Foundation dogs
A proposal, not a decision. Luna, Henry, Rain and Via replace the old roster entirely — but rather than delete Mika, Seal and Epic, they are kept below as foundation dogs. Mika in particular is the reason the breeding programme exists and she runs right through Anat’s own story. Say the word and this whole section comes out; or tell us which dogs belong here and how you would like them described now.

Mika

AKC Champion Wayfarer Pure Karma RN THD CGC

Anat’s first AKC Champion, registered Service Dog and constant companion. A Reading Rover companion for local children, a visitor to nursing homes, and half of a Pet Partner team with Rhode Island Home & Hospice. Mika, which means “gift from God” in Hebrew, is where Karma begins. Read her story →

The family dinghy, named for her.

Seal

AKC Grand Champion Karma Queen of Kings Can’t Touch This Royal Seal

Born April 2011. Best of Breed at 11 months from the puppy class, defeating a Special; finished her Championship at 18 months and was awarded Grand Champion. Once AKC’s number one ranked PWD in Rhode Island.

Epic

AKC Grand Champion Karma’s What Happens in Vegas… Epic!

The Wix site listed Epic’s registered name and nothing more.

And Beckham? He was the only dog on the old Males page and is not in your new list. Retired, gone, or simply not mentioned? He is left out for now rather than guessed at.
