Whelping can be one of the most extraordinary — and unpredictable — moments in a breeding program. Even with careful planning, every labor is different, and knowing what is normal, what needs attention, and when it is time to intervene comes from experience.
With more than 35 years of hands-on breeding and whelping experience, I provide calm, knowledgeable support before, during, and immediately after delivery.
My role as your whelping doula is not to replace your veterinarian. It is to help you prepare, observe, recognize changes, make informed decisions, and communicate effectively with your veterinary team when needed.
Before the first puppy arrives
Preparation begins well before labor. Together, we can review your expected timeline, whelping setup and supplies, discuss the stages of labor and the signs to watch for, and develop a plan for both routine delivery and unexpected situations.
The goal is simple: when labor begins, you are prepared rather than panicked.
During whelping
When the moment arrives, I am there to help you navigate the progression of labor and the arrival of each puppy with a calm, experienced perspective.
Support may include:
- Recognizing normal labor patterns
- Tracking puppies and placentas
- Assessing maternal behavior
- Assisting with immediate newborn care
- Monitoring nursing
- Identifying circumstances that warrant veterinary attention
Sometimes the most valuable thing an experienced breeder can provide is knowing when to help — and when to simply allow nature to work.
After delivery
Whelping doesn’t end when the last puppy is born.
The first hours and days are critical for establishing nursing, monitoring the dam, tracking puppy weights and identifying subtle changes before they become larger problems. I can help you establish practical routines for observation, record keeping and early neonatal care while supporting the natural relationship between mother and puppies.

My purpose is to bring both preparation and perspective to your side of the whelping box, so you never feel like you’re navigating it alone.
Because successful whelping isn’t just about delivering puppies. It is about protecting the dam, giving every puppy the strongest possible beginning, and knowing when experience tells you it’s time to act.
